![]() ![]() Published in 1850, The Narrative of Sojourner Truth was spoken aloud to Truth’s friend and neighbor Olive Gilbert, as she herself was illiterate. She was later named one of the 100 Most Significant Americans of All Time by Smithsonian magazine. She made it her life’s mission to free all those who were considered less than equal-both those in chains and those held down because of their gender-ultimately inspiring her friends and followers with the legendary speech that came to be known as “Ain’t I a Woman?” So great was Truth’s renown and respect that she met with President Abraham Lincoln in 1864. Escaping to a friendly household before emancipation, she learned that her young son had been sold illegally and launched a lawsuit that would end with his release-the first time in America that a black woman went to court against a white man and won. Born into slavery in New York around 1797, then sold from master to master, Sojourner Truth spent her formative years witnessing the cruelty inherent in the institution of slavery. From slavery to liberation to life as an abolitionist, feminist, orator, and preacher-the autobiography of a woman who refused to be anything but free. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Soon their long-range probes relay back satellite images of a planet in a nearby star system that may harbor its own life. Several centuries from now, long after mankind has reduced Earth to not much more than a toxic, radioactive wasteland devoid of virtually all birds, fish, and mammals above the size of a rat, benevolent aliens descend from space to help us re-cultivate what is left of our planet. His seminal work Expedition repeatedly caught my teenage self off guard with its evocative and breathtaking speculative paintings of the fauna of an alien world, and it's anyone's guess how many times I read this book in those comfy chairs at that B&N.Įxpedition does tell a story, but it is secondary to the exozoological art. I particularly enjoyed the big art books and "technical manuals" for things such as Star Wars, Star Trek, the Colonial Marines from the Alien film franchise, and, of course, the works of Wayne Barlowe. In high school, I used to grab my discman and walk to the big Barnes & Noble at the mall sometimes after classes and spend hours browsing through the science fiction section, reading whatever caught my attention. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When Reed Hastings co-founded Netflix, he developed a set of counterintuitive and radical management principles, defying all tradition and expectation, which would allow the company to reinvent itself over and over on the way to becoming one of the most loved brands in the world. However, it remains the only Masterton novel produced to date.) (The film, starring Tony Curtis and Susan Strasberg, was released three years later, directed by the late William Girdler. After first working as a reporter, then an editor for such lofty British publications as Mayfair and Penthouse, Masterton struck the right vein by returning to the supernatural with his first published novel, The Manitou, in 1975. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1946, Masterton has had a lifelong fascination with both writing and horror, having completed his first epic work - a 550-page vampire novel - for the amusement of his friends at the ripe old age of twelve. ![]() One of the most popular - and prolific - dark dreamers on both sides of the Atlantic is England's Graham Masterton. ![]() ![]() The author kept bringing up how she never lies, and values transparency so much, blah, blah, blah. One of my biggest frustrations with this book was Ayla’s (dis)honesty. They don’t see each other for another year and a half, and eventually start hooking up again - well, more like hate-fucking, but you get it. His best friend, Ayla’s half-brother, recently died and the circumstances of his death leave Rhett hating his guts. ![]() Okay, so Rhett is hot, talented, and (hot) tempered - but he’s got a heart of ice (see what I did there?). It’s a hockey romance, which is one of my favorite subcategories in sports romance, but I there was just too much going on that I wasn’t in love with. As per my rating, I have mixed feelings about this one. ![]() ![]() ![]() Maas's Crescent City series reaches new heights as Bryce and Hunt's world is brought to the brink of collapse-with its future resting on their shoulders.įirst of all, if Hunt, Bryce, and Ruhn don't live happily ever after in this.
